We live in a country with approximate 9 religions with majority of the population being Hindu. I was born in a Hindu family, my grandparents practised and followed the religion by heart and so did my parents. But I never remember any of my family member talking ill about other religions, at least they never said anything in front of me. We lived in the rural part of Pune. My father was stringent that me and my brother studied in a good quality English medium school and so we travelled 34 kms both ways every day in order to receive that good quality education.
The best thing of being part of that school was, it had students and teachers from all religions, caste and creed. And I had friends who belonged to different religions, who spoke different mother tongue, but none of us belittled each other’s believes. As a child I knew there were certain religious books that were followed by people, even my grandfather and my mother preached about verses from Bhagvatgeeta, but it was just in a format of stories. They never forced me to read it or follow it. My grandfather kept telling me only one thing throughout his life, “Be a good person.” And that is what I try.
What I have never liked is people outside my family telling me that I am Hindu and hence I have to do certain things or follow certain principles. I am not a strong believer in any religion or caste, what I believe in is humanity. I am not sure why I am like this inspite of being born in a Hindu family and marrying a boy whose family is also stern Hindu follower. Now that I think about it, it takes me back to the singing competition that I participated in when I was in grade 4. I selected, ‘ Saare jahan se acha Hindustan humara’ for the recital. While I was practising it at home, my grandfather came to me and helped me with what the song actually meant. The line I loved the most was, ‘majhab nahi sikhata aapas mein bair rakhna’. It means ‘religion do not teach hatred among themselves’. This line stayed with me since then and that is why I believe, all religions are good and there is no superior religion.
I hope my belief will stay with me as I grow old because what’s important is to be a good human just like my grandfather wanted me to be.
P.S- I lost the competition, because I forgot the lines after my fav line and obviously I did not sing well.
