Its been over five years that I delivered a baby boy through a C-Section.
Even though it has been more than 5 years, my surgery scar is almost invisible but the scars in my mind are still fresh. So many allegations were raised on me after my delivery. Well, it was not at all in my control to deliver a baby. What was in my control was to raise a well-behaved good human. So, today I am going to talk to you about my delivery day.
My expected due date was 11th Dec 2014, I was scheduled for a colour doppler sonography on 21st November 2014. In the morning after breakfast, I went along with my parents to the ultrasound centre and I was feeling very happy because I was again going to see my baby and hear his heartbeats. The sonographer did his detailed study and, in the end, told me, “There is a calcification around the placenta. Please consult the doctor.” The smile on my face faded, my heart raced. I did everything right during my entire pregnancy, ate well, exercised well even rested; so what went wrong! As I walked out of the ultrasound room, my parents sensed the tension on my face, I passed the information. My father soon called my doctor, but he was already out of his office. We were told to visit in the evening.
We all went home and with a heavy heart I did what I should not have; I googled. It had mixed opinions, then I spoke to my husband who was in the USA for work purpose. He got worried too, so I told him to relax, even he did his bit by Googling about the situation. My mother was encouraging me, “Everything will be fine,” she kept saying but, I did not want fine; I wanted it to be perfect. I kept myself busy throughout the noon and in the evening, we went to meet the doctor. My doctor was busy with other delivery, so I was taken by his wife who was also an Ob-Gyn. She studied the report and checked me, she looked content. “Get admitted tonight, we will deliver a baby,” were her words. All the firecrackers exploded in my brain, “How is it possible? I am not ready to deliver the baby yet,” I replied in a shock. She smiled and explained, “There is calcification around the placenta, so the baby won’t get enough food supply and oxygen to breathe. You are in the full-term pregnancy now and the baby is also fully grown so its ok. You do not have to worry.” How could I not worry? “Can I come tomorrow? Can we do this tomorrow?” I asked her politely. “You may but if you stay, we will be able to monitor your baby’s heartbeat continuously and will monitor your pulse and blood pressure too,” she was trying to calm me. I thought about it, “No. I can’t do it today, please. I will monitor my baby’s movements every hour and will come tomorrow morning,” I told her. She agreed to it. We all went home, and I was continuously checking my baby’s movements, I could not sleep the entire night. I never prayed so hard to God, I just wanted my bub to be safe and healthy.
In the morning at 7 O’ clock, I went in and got admitted. Around 8 am my doctor induced me and from 10 am I started getting the pains. I had read all about delivery but when the pains started, my knowledge was not helping me. By 12 my pains were severe with the frequency of half an hour. At 2 pm my water was broken, a lot of blood was gone, the pains were terrible. The Doctor was making rounds to check the dilation, it was 3 cm at 4 pm and it was 3cm even at 6 pm. I was in a hell lot of pain, the sister was continuously calming me, she was holding my hand patting my head, wiping my sweat. In those desperate time, I wanted to talk to my husband who was miles away from me, I called him but, he was fast asleep so did not answer my call. He was unaware that I was about to deliver our baby. At 7 pm, the doctor came to check on me and I was still 3 cm dilated. “We are taking you for the surgery, we are going to perform a caesarean on you. You have lost a lot of blood and your baby is not getting enough oxygen,” he informed me. “Please speak to my parents and then take the decision. Just keep my baby safe,” I cried. “We all have discussed, and the decision has been made. Just stay strong. You will soon see your baby,” he replied with a smile. At 7:27 pm my bub was out, but he did not cry…not a single sound from my baby. The doctor patted his back, but nothing. “Please show me, my baby,” I said subconsciously. The doctor gave me a glance of my baby and took him away. Tears were racing from my eyes; I was subconscious due to the heavy dose of anaesthesia. I felt them stitching me back and cleaning me. They put me on the stretcher and transferred me to the room. I was half asleep, I opened my eyes, my parents were in the room sitting tensed. “Where is my baby?” I asked my father. “He will be here soon. Don’t worry darling. Congratulations to you,” he answered kissing my forehead. They were talking on the phone conveying the good news to my in-laws and my husband and all other relatives. Finally, at 10 pm, my bub was back. The doctor said, “Your baby was struggling inside. He was unable to breathe so we had to give him artificial oxygen. He is fine now. Congratulations.”
I looked at my baby, he was our creation. My happiness had no limits, I stared at him, the surgery did not allow me to sit straight. My father was holding the baby while I was looking at him. His struggle was real, the lack of oxygen and blood had blackened his lips and groin area. He was calm, he had no idea he was out in this world. With his birth, I was also reincarnated since that day till today I stare at him every night when sleeps. I have faced many problems after his birth, have stayed awake all night and day. But with just one smile and a hug from him melts my heart. Every mother is a warrior in her way when it comes to protecting her child.
