“नमस्ते. मी रेणुका ताजने. बाजूच्या फ्लॅट मधे राहते. तुम्ही मागच्या आठवड्यात शिफ्ट झालात ना, म्हणून भेटायला आले नवीन शेजाऱ्यांना.” “या ना घरात या…” निशाने सोफा आवरत काकूंना आत बोलावले. “खुप पसारा आहे घरात. मुलं नुसती धिंगाणा घालतात. आवरणार होते मी आता, इतक्यात तुम्ही आलात.” निशाला आपल्या घरातल्या पासर्याचा रागच आला होता, दिवसभर बिचारी आवरा- आवरी करत असते पण मुलं काही शांत नसतात. “असू दे. अग मुलं आहेत घरात तर पसारा होणारच,” हसत ताजने काकूंनी तिची समजूत काढली. “काय आणु तुमच्यासाठी? चहा की सरबत? नाष्टा बनवू का काही?” निशाने उत्सुकतेने काकूंना विचारले. “काहीच नको.. मी कुठे लांबचा प्रवास करून आले. जेवले आणि इकडे आले. म्हटल बघू कोण आलेत राहायला. आम्ही नवरा बायकोच असतो घरी. जरा आजूबाजूच्या ओळखी असतील तर बरं नाहीका.. आणि तुम्हाला काही मदत लागली तर नक्की ये आमच्याकडे,” काकू निघायला उठल्या. ” एक मिनिट काकू. हळद कुंकू घेऊन जा. पहिल्यांदा आलात ना.” निशाने काकूंना हळदकुंकू लावून नमस्कार केला एवढ्यात तिचे मुलं धावत बाहेर आले.. पळत, उड्या मारत आले आणि तसेच आत गेले..
निशा आणि तिचा नवरा, मूळ नागपूरचे, कामाची बदली झाली म्हणून पुण्याला आले. निशा घर सांभाळायची, तिचा अख्खा दिवस मुलांचं करण्यात जात असे, त्यांच्या आवडीनुसार स्वयंपाक, त्यांनी मांडलेला पसारा आवरणे, त्यांचा अभ्यास घेणे, त्यांना बागेत घेऊन जाणे, हे सर्व करण्यात तीची दमछाक होत.
निशा बोलकी असल्यामुळे तिने पटकन बिल्डिंग मधे ओळखी करून घेतल्या. कोणाच्याही मदतीला धावून जायची आणि स्वतः ला काही लागत असेल तर हक्काने बोलवायची सुद्धा. मुलं शाळेत गेली की पटापट उरलेलं काम आवरून निशा गप्पा ठोकायला मोकळी.
एक दिवशी संध्याकाळी मुलांचा अभ्यास सुरू असताना, शेजारच्या काकू आल्या. “काही हवंय का काकू? मी जरा मुलांचा अभ्यास घेते, थोडी बिझी आहे,”निशाने दारातच काकूंना सांगितलं. “काही नकोय. मी घेऊ का अभ्यास? पूर्वी शिक्षिका होते मी. मुलांमुळे नोकरी सोडावी लागली,” काकूंना विनम्रपणे विचारले. “हो. हो. या ना. तुम्ही कधी बोलल्या नाही,” निशा आश्चर्यचकित होऊन बोलली. “सांगायचं काय त्यात, खूप वर्ष झाले आता. तुला चालत असेल तर मी रोज येऊ मुलांना शिकवायला?” काकूंनी थोड अडून विचारलं. “तशी शिकवणी ची गरज नाहीये मुलांना फक्त लक्ष देते मी त्यांच्याकडे. हुशार आहेत दोघे, पण चंचलपणा जास्त आहे,” निशा केस सावरत बोलली. “मी देईल ना लक्ष. अग घरी बसून फार कंटाळा येतो. मुलांमध्ये मन रमते, तेवढाच तासभर फ्रेश वाटेल मला. तु पाहिजे तर तुझ्या नवऱ्याला विचार, मी जबरदस्ती नाही करत,” काकूंनी थोडं संकोचत विचारलं. “आहो नाही काकू. तसं काहीं नाही. या तुम्ही!” निशाने काकूंच्या हातात चहाचा कप टेकवत परवानगी दिली.
रेणू काकू रोज मुलांचा अभ्यास घ्यायला येत, मुलांना सुद्धा त्यांचा लळा लागला.
एक दिवशी दुपारी निशा, पहिल्या माळ्या वरच्या अक्षता सोबत गप्पा मारत बसली होती, बोलता बोलता काकू कशी रोज घरी येते आणि मुलांचा अभ्यास घेते हा विषय झाला. त्यावर अक्षता बोलली, “रेणू काकू असच करतात, ज्या घरात लहान मुलं असतात तिथे सारख्या जातात. त्यांना ३ मुलं आहेत, त्यातला एक मुलगा जपान ला गेला आणि तिकडेच सेटल झाला. एक मुलगा कामानिमित्त दिल्लीला गेला १० वर्षांपूर्वी, तो काही परतला नाही आणि एक मुलगी जी लग्न करून दुबई ला गेली, ती सुद्धा कधीच माहेरी नाही आली. दोघे काका काकू खूप खचून गेले, तेव्हा पासून दुसऱ्यांच्या मुलांवर खुप जीव लावतात.” हे सगळं ऐकून निशाला खूप वाईट वाटलं, काकुंसाठी काहीतरी केलं पाहिजे असं तिला वाटू लागलं. तरीच काका काकू नेहमी दुसऱ्यांना काही ना काही मदत करतात, सगळ्यांच्या सुख- दुःखात असतात. कोणाला काही अडचण आली तर समजूत घालतात, जे सगळ स्वतः च्या मुलांसोबत नाही करता आलं ते सगळं बिल्डिंग मधल्या लोकांसाठी करतात.
रात्री निशाने तिच्या नवऱ्याला, रेणू काकुंबद्दल सगळ सांगितलं, त्यालाही त्यांची दया आली. “आपण काही करू शकतो का?” सहज निशाच्या नवऱ्याने विचारले.
२ महिन्यांनी काका काकूंच्या लग्नाचा ५०वा वाढदिवस येणार होता, निशाला वाटले हीच ती वेळ होती, त्यांच्या मुलांना भेटायला बोलवायची. खुप धडपड करत, आढे वेढे घेत तिने तिन्ही मुलांचे ईमेल आणि फोन नंबर मिळवले. त्यांना कॉन्टॅक्ट करून तिने सांगितले की दोघांसाठी सरप्राइज पार्टी करायची आहे, कसही काम थोडं बाजूला ठेऊन आई वडिलांसाठी या. तेव्हा तिघेही हो बोलले, निशा खुश झाली, हळूहळू बिल्डिंग मधल्या लोकांनी काका- काकू साठी पार्टीचं आयोजन सुरू केलं आणि सगळं इतकं गुपीत ठेवलं की काकूंना अजीबात खबर लागली नाही. दोघांना नवीन कपडे केले, छानसा जुन्या फोटोंचा व्हिडिओ बनवला, त्यांच्या आवडीचा मेनू ठेवला, छोट्या मुलांनी नाच बसवला. सगळी तयारी झाली आता फक्त काका काकूंची मुलं यायची बाकी होतो.
कार्यक्रमाचा दिवस उजाडला, निशाने काकूंना मस्त नटवले. त्यांचा आनंद खरच गगनात मावेनासा झाला होता. निशाला वेगळीच हुरहूर लागली होती, तिघांपैकी एकही मूल आलं नव्हत, तिने मनात विचार केला की बरं झालं काका काकूंना काही सांगितलं नव्हतं, बिचारे वाट बघत बसले असते.
शेवटी त्यांचा पोटच्या मुलांशिवाय कार्यक्रम सुरळीत पार पाडला. काकू तर शेवटी अश्या रडत होत्या जणू पहिल्यांदाच सासरी चाल्या होत्या. सगळे हॉल मधे गप्पा मारत बसले होते, काकांनी माईक हातात घेतला, सगळे शांत झाले. “सर्वप्रथम तुमचे सर्वांचे मनापासून धन्यवाद. आम्ही दोघे खूप भाग्यवान आहोत की तुमच्या सारखे मुलं आम्हाला लाभले, नाहीतर ज्यांना उडायला शिकवले ते चिऊ काऊ घरट्याच्या रस्ताच विसरले. तुम्ही सर्वांनी कधीच आम्हाला जाणीव होऊ दिली नाही, प्रत्येक सण आमच्या सोबत साजरा केला. मी तर म्हणतो बरं झालं आज माझी मुलं इथे नाहीत, तीन च्या बदल्यात आम्हाला तीस मुलं मिळाली. निशा आम्हाला माहित आहे, तू आमच्या मुलांना खूप आग्रह केला यायला, पण ते नव्हते येणार हे माहित होतं आम्हाला. चिऊताई चे बाळ मोठं झालं आणि उडून गेलं ते बरच झालं, नाहीतर ती बिचारी दिवसभर त्याला न्हाऊ घाल, खाऊ घाल हेच करत बसली असती आणि घराबाहेर नसती पडली, इतर पक्ष्यांना नसती भेटली. आता चिऊताई सगळ्यांना खुश ठेवते आणि स्वतः देखील आनंदी राहते.
