डिलिव्हरी नंतर तिसऱ्या दिवशी त्यांना घरी सोडले. सुमनच्या सासूबाईंने सगळ्यांना खडसाउन सांगितले होते, “अंतराला काहीच त्रास नाही झाला पहिजे माहेरी. सर्वांनी व्यवस्थित रहा.” सुमनला खूप उत्सुकता होती, पण खूप घाबरली सुद्धा होती, नकळत काही चूक नाही होयला पाहिजे, जरा गरम डोक्याची होती ना. ” आई मी घरातले सगळे रूटीन काम करेल, ताईंना काय खायला द्यायचे ते तुम्ही बघा,” सुमन ने सासूबाईंना सांगून दिले. रोज सकाळी खोलीतून बाहेर आल्यावर सुमन हळूच बाळंतिणीच्या खोलीत डोकवायची, बाळ जागा असेल तर लगेच खेळायला जायची. तिच मन अगदी प्रसन्न व्हायचे त्याला बघून, तेवढ्याच वेळात नणंदेची चौकशी करायची, ” झोपला का रात्री नीट? आज गोड शिरा करणार आहे, चालेल ना तुम्हाला नाश्ट्याला?” “काहीपण चालेल. जे सगळ्यांसाठी करतेस तेच मला पण दे,” हसत अंतरा उत्तर देत.
एकदा काय सुमन किचन मधे घुसली की नाश्ता, दुपारचे जेवण आणि सगळी भांडी धुवून बाहेर येइ. तो पर्यंत मालिश वाल्या मावशी येउन जात, सर्वांची आंघोळ होइ. मग सगळे कपडे गोळा करुन मशिन मधे टाकायची. बाळाची आंघोळ झाल्यावर मस्त गाढ झोपायचा तो. अधूनमधून नणंदेसोबत गप्पा मरायला जायची सुमन. बाळाचे कपडे रीतसर धुवुन काढायची, सासूबाई बोलायच्या तिला, “अग राहून दे कपडे बाळाचे, मी धुवेन. तू आजारी पडशिल एवढं काम करुन.” ” थोडे एक्स्ट्रा काम करुन काय मी आजारी नाही पडनार. कुठे खूप भाचे आहेत मला!” सुमन हसून बोलली.
४-५ वाजता बाळ उठाय्चा, बाळाचा आवाज येताच ति गप्पा मारायला जायची. एकदा काय बाळ हसला कि सगळा ताण नाहीसा होयचा. सगळ्यांच रुटिन बदलले होते, आणि कितीही दमलेले असतील तरी त्या चिमुकल्या ला पाहून सगळ्यांच्या चेहऱ्यावर स्मितहास्य येइ. एवढासा जीव तरीपण कसा सगळ्याना लळा लावला त्याने !
म्हणता म्हणता एक महिना झाला बाळाला आणि अंतराला सासरची ओढ लागली होती. “रोहनची खूप ताणाताण होते. शाळा, ट्यूशन मुळे खूप धावपळ होते त्याची.”, अंतराला मोठ्या मुलाची काळजी सतावत होती.
इकडे सुमनला हुरहुर लागली होती, नणंद आणि बाळ रिटर्न जाणार म्हणजे पुन्हा तेच रुटिन. पण ति कधीतरी जाणार होतीच ना, तिने स्वतःची समजूत काढली.
“उद्या दुपारी जाइल बोलते अंतरा,” अस बोलत सासुबाई मुलीची बॅग भरु लागल्या. सुमन दिवस भर बाळाला भेटलीच नाही, खूपच लळा लागला होता तिला त्याचा. रात्र भर कुस बदलत राहिली सुमन, निट झोप अशी लागलिच नाही. सकाळी बाळाचे वाळलेले कपडे ठेवायला गेली तर तो पाळण्यात खेळत होता, त्याला पाहून लगेच उचलून घेतला तिने, ” नको ना सोडून जाउस मला” अस बोलून त्याचा मुका घेतला. अंतराला पण भरुन आलच होत पण काही बोल्ली नाही. किचन मधे नाश्ट्याची तयारी चालू केली पण सुमनचे लक्ष सगळे बाळा कडे. रोज तर दुपारच जेवण भांडी आवरल्यावरच ती बाळाला भेटत पण आज सारखी ह्या न त्या कारणाने जात. भरलेल्या बॅगा बघून दुःख होत होतं. दुपारी सुमन तिच्या मुलाला शाळेतुन घेउन आली, तेव्हा लिफ्ट मधे त्याची समजूत काढत होती, “आत्या आणि बाळ आज त्यांच्या घरी जाणार आहेत. पण आपण त्यांना कधीही भेटू शकतो, जवळच राहते ना आत्या!” सुमन स्वतःची समजूत काढत होती कि मुलाची माहित नाही, पण डोळे भरून आले होते तिचे. अगदी बाळाला पहिल्यांदा पहिले ना तसे. सायंकाळी नंदावे घ्यायला आले अंतराला. सगळ सामान सासूबाई ने व्यवस्थित पॅक केल होत. सासरे बाळाला घेउन बसले होतें त्यांचे पन डोळे पाणावले होते. “काळजी घे दीदी”, बोलून मुलीचा मुका घेतला त्यांनी. सुमनच्या मिस्टरांनीपण अंतराला जवळ घेतले. सगळ्यांची लाड्किच आहे अंतरा तशी. सुमन उगाच कुठेतरी बघत उभी होती, खंबीर होयचा प्र्यत्न करत होती. शेवटी अंतराच आली सुमन कडे, “चल बाय”, बोलून मिठी मारली. “रहा ना अजून थोडे”, बोलत सुमन रडायला लागली. शेवटी सगळ्यांनी स्वतःला सावरले आणि हसमुखाने अंतराला बाय बाय केल.
अस होते जेव्हा मुलगी सासरी जाते, सगळ्यांवर जीव ओवाळून टाकते. सुमन तिच्या खोलीत आली आणि गुपचूप हात जोडून देवाला प्रार्थना केली, “सुखी ठेव माझ्या नणंदेला आणि भाच्याला.”
