Summer is just around the corner and we all will have to bear the scorching heat and the inevitable sweat. There are few people who really love Summers, one of them is my grandmother who sits in the sun and literally sun-bathes. The ozone layer is depleting rapidly due to toxic gases and various human activities. At a large scale we can do many things but today in this blog we are going to concentrate on protecting ourselves and our kids from the SUN
DE-HYDRATION: In summers we sweat profusely thus losing the water from our body, it is thus very important to keep ourselves hydrated. Though adults can drink a lot of plain water, kids hate to drink water. Give them a combination
of fresh juices and water. Try and avoid giving market bought juices due to the high amount of sugar and preservatives, it is always good to give them homemade juices. Try watermelon juice, lemon juice, mango juice as these fruits are readily available in Summer and do not require sugar in them. You may also consume tender coconut water. Give water bottles to kids wherever they go, especially in the evenings when they go to the park. It is essential that adults carry water bottles with them too rather than staying thirsty or drinking unhygienic water outside.
SKIN PROTECTION: Avoid going in the sun from 11 am-5 pm as the UV rays are at their peak and can harm your skin, make sure you have a lot of indoor activities for kids as they get bored easily. When stepping out in the sun cover your head with a hat/ cap/scarf. Do not wear skin-hugging clothes if you are going to stay

outdoors, they will make you and the kids uncomfortable, instead, pick breezy/ loose outfits. Wear clothes made of cotton. Choose light colours as they repel the sunlight. Pick suitable sunglasses, invest in a good polaroid pair that will keep your eyes safe too. Apply sunscreen on the sun-exposed part 15 minutes before stepping in the sun and re-apply every 4 hours. In case you get sunburns or heat rashes immediately visit a Doctor, you may also apply aloe vera gel for cooling effect. Bathe kids before going to bed every day and wear loose clothes for the night too.
FOOD: Avoid eating greasy/oily, spicy food. Due to heat and dehydration, many of us suffer indigestion and acidity problems. Drinking buttermilk (add mint leaves in it) after meals will help in digestion and keep our body cool. Eat freshly cooked food, as the heat spoils food easily. Add a lot of fruits and greens to your diet during Summer.
Have a Happy Summer
