The ‘beauty parlour’ trap

A lady must always look presentable, and to look so she sometimes takes an aid from the ‘beauty parlour’. I am a regular beauty parlour person, no I don’t go for major makeovers but regular threading and waxing are basic and depending on the function I am attending, I select the services, facial, hair spa, pedicure, manicure, head massage, hair cut, etc. Over a period of time, I have finalised a beauty parlour that is not too expensive in my neighbourhood. I am very particular about my eyebrows shape so if the lady who always serves me is unavailable, I don’t do it.
What I have experienced in my 15 years of parlour experience, is that the parlour didi is not just there to follow your instructions but they are there for sales. Even when I go for routine eyebrows, she persuades me for a head massage or just a cleanup, “Ma’am, your face looks so tanned! Why don’t you try our de-tan cleanup?” or “Ma’am, I am seeing rashes on your hand, next time don’t go for regular wax, try chocolate wax. Your skin will be soft as silk.” I go with my head held straight and say no to all the services she is luring me with, but sometimes I do fall in her trap and instead of spending just Rs.50, I end up spending Rs. 2000.
Recently, I went for a hair trim because I had developed split ends. Instead of just chopping my hair the ‘hairstylist’ started examining my hair, “Ma’am, you have dandruff in your hair. Your scalp is very dry too. I would like to suggest you a hair wash with XYZ shampoo and then let’s do some hair spa.” What does that guy think, ‘Am I unaware about my hair and scalp quality? Even I read Femina and cosmopolitan? I don’t need to hear it from him.’ Sometimes I reply to him with a smile denying his offerings and sometimes I fall in his trap and spend Rs.3000 on the hair with 0% change in my hair texture or scalp condition. All in vain just to pamper me. The most hurtful thing is when you return home and your family notices no change in your skin or hair, rather the question thrown at you is, ‘what were you doing in the parlour for so long?’
Well, it’s impossible to dodge the beauty parlour trap all the time, sometimes its ok to indulge in things just for a sake of it, because we live only once and the beauty parlour didi is always right.
