Over the period, I have developed a liking for sarees. We all know, ‘a woman can never have enough clothes. It is true. In the first year of marriage, I barely had 10 sarees. And now in the seventh year, I have almost 50 of heavy work and heavy border sarees. I wear these sarees only when there is some family occasion. My father always says, “A woman looks her best when she wears a saree” and my husband believes in the same.
I barely wore saree 4 times before I got married, so I was not an expert in draping it. It looks so easy, but it is one big task to wear perfect saree and carry it with ease. On the second day after the wedding, I was supposed to get ready for a puja. I was in a room, struggling with the saree and all of the husband’s sisters-in-law were looking at me. Finally, they realised my struggle and came to my rescue and I was ready in just 10 minutes thereafter. Everyone was waiting for me in the puja room, my husband whispered, “What took you so long?” “I don’t know how to wear a saree!” I told him with a sad face.
My mother-in-law told me to wear a saree for family occasions like weddings, engagements or any function where all the family comes together. I was happy with her decision the only problem was how was I going to wear a saree? It was my first Diwali after marriage, and she got me a new saree. I got the blouse stitched and saree ready, but the problem was still the same. As I was getting ready, my husband entered the room and looked at me, my make up was done, hair was made in a bun, and all the jewellery was shining on me. I was wearing the blouse and petticoat and the saree was around me messed up. I was almost in tears, he quickly grabbed my phone and searched for a saree draping video on YouTube. He was learning the technique. Both of us saw the video together and came up with the plan, he was holding all the pleats and pinning them up for me. I was ready and wearing perfect saree. Now every time, I wear a saree he helps me with the pleating and the pinning part. But he travels a lot due to his work and if any function comes up in his absence, I am in distress. So, I have segregated sarees that I can wear on my own and sarees that will need him.
His work does not end with the pleating and pinning. He also has to click near to a hundred photos out of which I like a few tens that I upload on my Instagram with #sixyardsofelegance. He makes me look elegant every time I drape it.
