Rakshabandhan

Raskha Bandhan has been one of my favourite festivals since childhood. When I and my brother were kids, Mummy used to bring a rakhi and a bar of chocolate. Rakhi for me, to tie on my brother’s wrist and chocolate as my gift from my brother. Rakhis were big with multiple layers, the most bottom layer was of a shiny flower shaped paper then was a sponge, then again a shiny paper topped with ‘Om’ or

‘Swastik’ or a floral design. And my chocolate was an Rs.10 Dairy Milk. On this day Mummy also used to make lip-smacking ‘Naral Vadi’ (a sweet dish made using coconut).  By the end of the day, the box of Naral Vadiwould get empty. She has never gone wrong in this recipe, every time same taste, same texture, and same consistency.

As we grew the size of my rakhi shrank to intricate designs of rakhi made up with pearls and diamonds. And the size of my gift increased too. From Rs.10 Dairy Milk it progressed to a Toblerone, Cadbury Celebration box, Silk chocolate and a box of cookies. My happiness level was directly proportionate to the number of chocolates received.
The girl ties rakhi not only to her brother but also to first and second cousins. So basically, it is a super happy day for all the girls receiving so many gifts. Last year on the day of Raksha Bandhan, I told my husband that I wish to host the lunch party. So, I was charged up making lunch for almost 15 people. The menu was curated keeping in mind the tastes of my guests. We all had a gala together. It is said, “Cousins are our first friends” and it is so true.
Last year, I told my brother that I won’t accept cash for the next Raksha Bandhan and he has to give me a gift. Because, once I get the cash money, I use it and it’s gone in no time. But the gift stays with me and every time I see it; it reminds me of my brother. My relationship with my brother is just like Tom & Jerry. We fight with each other all the time; we can’t stand each other but we can’t live without each other.
Since, the childhood we have been fighting with each other, complaining to Mummy, throwing things at each other, fighting for the remote control, comparing the mark sheets, etc. But it was my brother who cried the most when I got married. My husband’s sister-in-law said, “Your brother was crying so much that we it was difficult to take you away from him.” He is very sensitive towards me and so am I. We curse each other and fight all the time but if any third person comes between us, we become a team, even if the third person is our mother or father, we don’t spare anyone.

There is no love like the love for a brother. There is no other love like from a brother.
