When I was pregnant, there was one thing that I and my husband decided; it was to ‘not push our child too much to achieve certain things’. We were firm on it until people around us started getting pushy. Our baby is a chubby one and had delayed speech, he looked like 3 years old but he was just 1.5 years. Whenever he was out in the public, people would come to talk to him due to his cuteness. But he could not answer them, “Oh he does not talk yet. You must do something about it,” were the suggestions. In the beginning, we ignored such suggestions, he babbled and used few words and we were sure he would get there and be a chatterbox one day.
Once he started talking at the age of 2, he could not be quiet, and I thought this would shut people’s mouth but it did not happen. While he was in Playgroup, and I was peacefully waiting outside the school for my kid to return, a lady approached me and asked, “Does your son speak A-Z?” “No, not completely but he enjoys listening to it when I sing it for him!” I snapped. “Oh, my daughter learnt it when she was just a year old,” she continued. “Good for you. You have a smart kid,” I replied. I returned home and was really hard on my son to learn A-Z. My husband reminded me about our decision, I knew my kid would learn all the regular things but these kinds of parents are really toxic.
Now, when my son is in Jr. Kg, I have learned to stay away from all the parents, because I don’t want to compare my kid with any other kid and I have a strong opinion, ‘Every kid is special and is a hero in his/her way.’ “Can your son write A-Z in the capital and small as well?” a random parent asked me while I was waiting at the school gate to pick him. “No. In school they have taught only capital alphabets till R, so that’s all he knows,” I tried to smile while answering. “Oh, my son writes A-Z in the capital as well as in small. I take his practice every day. You must do it too” she replied with pride. “He will manage,” I said trying to keep my dignity high.
Prepare your kids for the best, just don’t compare them with their friends and peers. I understand the world is very competitive and every field follows Darwin’s theory of evolution but that does not mean we compare our tiny humans with others, let them be free at such a young age. We will know what their interests are as they grow up and then we can mould them accordingly. Not all the kids can excel at sports and academics and arts, we don’t want robots, we want well- mannered humans who will do good in whatever they excel.
