The Toe Rings

I have always loved accessories, be it bangles, chains, earrings or anklets. My school was strict, we were not allowed to wear any of these things. Hence, once I was out of school, I started buying accessories. I would save money from my pocket money and would splurge on buying these things. I starkly remember I once bought the toe rings, it was sterling silver and I had loved it. On the weekend when I went to my Mom’s place she noticed the new toe rings and asked me to remove it immediately. “You should not wear these. Only married women wear it. Did you ask anyone before purchasing it?” she yelled at me. “But they are in trend, it looks lovely on my toes. And I don’t believe in all these things,” I explained. “No is my final answer,” she was rigid. I had no option but to remove it.
After my marriage, my mother-in-law told me, “Its ok sometimes to not wear certain jewellery but its mandatory to wear your toe rings. Never remove them.” I kept it in my mind, the toe rings that were given to me at my wedding were big, I did not like them. They were too old fashioned, but I had to keep them for a few years until my mother doesn’t gift me the new ones. That was the ritual, I decided to abide with it.  One day when I went for jogging, my toe rings started hurting me within my shoes, I stopped and looked at it, my toe was bleeding due to the ring, I quickly removed it and went home. I applied a band-aid to my toe and wore the toe ring again because I did not want to hurt my mother-in-law’s sentiments. Soon I was comfortable wearing toe rings every day.
After a few years, when I was in the USA with my husband and kid for a couple of months, my in-laws visited us. One weekend we went to the New York City and the city demands a lot of walking if you want to cover all the tourist spots, we were on our feet for the full day. My husband insisted that his parents wore walking shoes for comfort. End of the day when we were back to the hotel, my mother-in-law removed her toe rings because they were hurting her just like mine used to. She continued not wearing them during her stay in the States. I was happy because now she knew comfort matters a lot. She has never been very strict with me, she informs me the rituals and I try to follow them, if I fail to follow it she does not bother me. Later someday I was curious about the toe ring ritual and I found out something very interesting.
Toe rings are not just ornament to enhance beauty, but it connects your heart to your husband

and also connects to your own heart. It is said in Ayurveda that toe rings regulate the menstrual cycle and keeps uterus healthy thus, increasing the chances of conception. Who knew these tiny rings could be so beneficial?
