During my college days, my family members kept reminding me to put a bindi on my forehead. They would say, “We are Hindus, a girl must put a bindi (tikli) on her forehead.” I would persistently ignore them, “I am an Indian, I don’t follow your religion.” They even went to the extent where they told my mother that she should have been strict with me and the freedom she has levied on me is going to be dangerous in the future. My mother would be facepalmed with all the drama they created, but she never created a fuss.
I got married at the age of 25; in the stage where I was independent of any family restrictions and finances as well. I had certain opinions about things, and I would stick to them. We went to Italy for the honeymoon and as soon as we were back home, my mother-in-law insisted on seeing all the photos on TV. I told my husband to transfer all the photos from DSLR to the laptop and create a different folder with the decent photos that we all can watch together. After watching all the photos she said, “In the photos, Archana looks like a Christian girl, not Hindu.” I did not really understand how to react to her gullible comment.
I shared this with my mother and for the first time she said, “Why don’t you wear it on the traditional dresses. There is no harm dear if a small bindi is going to keep everyone happy, then why not!” She was correct, there was no harm in following what she suggested. In the house, I used to wear Kurtis and put a bindi on my forehead. But when I stepped out wearing jeans or dresses, I preferred not to put a bindi. My family members did not like it, but slowly all of us got adjusted to my bindi look on sarees and kurtis and non-bindi look on jeans and other western outfits. Every time I return back from the functions, the bindi from my forehead goes straight on the mirror of my dressing table. At the end of the month when I clean the mirror, I can count how many times I wore a bindi and which coloured attire I wore. Now I have collection of more than 50 packets of bindis, different shapes and sizes and vibrant colours.
I love to wear sarees and to dress up top to toe for functions and every time I use fancy colourful bindis to match my outfit. I don’t put bindi because I am a Hindu, but because it looks good on certain attire. I don’t put it because I am married, I do it because I like it sometime. Every time, I buy a new saree, I make sure I have a new bindi to match with it.
One thing is for sure, I look prettier with a big bindi, it compliments my big forehead.
